Serial to USB Converter - Does your
computer need one?
Most new desktops and laptops come with several
USB ports installed for connecting to scanners,
modems, printers, external sound cards,
wireless broadband cards, and many other
devices that require a USB
connection.
These new laptops and desktops are termed
“legacy-free” because the computers don’t have
the serial ports (the prior standard) that are
seen on older computers that may still be
functional today.
Therefore, many computer users need a serial to
USB converter.
|
Why did computer manufacturers stop using serial ports as the
standard on new computers?
There are a few reasons. Primarily, the serial ports were
suspected as the cause of an error with interrupting computer
functioning, particularly with laptops.
However, as with any transition from one standard to another,
serial ports are still needed for “legacy” gadgets. Global
positioning systems (GP), some printers, personal digital
assistants (PDAs), some scanners, and many other devices use a
serial port to share data with the computer, or use the
computer as the power charger.
To allow those legacy devices that require a serial drive to
connect to your new computer with USB drives, a serial to USB
converter (sometimes called a USB to serial converter) is
required. It’s quite a simple product, actually, and there
should be no complications in the use of a serial to USB
converter.
When purchasing one, you will find that they are readily
available for purchase in many locations, including pictures
highlighted near the top of this site. Serial to USB converters
are not particularly expensive; many can be purchased at around
$20.
USB to serial converter - What will it look
like?
It will have a USB connector on one end of
the converter. This USB end of the converter will be
connected to your new computer with the USB ports. The
converter will have a functioning serial port on the other
end. All serial to USB converters should come equipped with
these two ends, which serve to “reverse” your new computer,
thereby making it compatible with your legacy devices with
serial ports.
Most serial to USB converters come with
software that walks you quickly and easily through the
installation of driver devices on your new computer.
Don’t be alarmed! The software holds your hand through the
process.
As we mentioned, a couple USB to
serial converter options are highlighted
above. Take a look!
